A Quiet Perseverance
This piece of choreography was created through a hands on experience with the aphasic community thanks to the National Aphasia Association. The excerpt tells the story of a woman who has aphasia and the journey she is on to reinvent oneself. Her frustrations are exposed as she goes through the motions of physical rehab and the lack of words she has to communicate with her spouse. Largely inspired by Samuel Beckett's last poem "What is the Word" dedicated to Joseph Chaikin who had aphasia, Urda's work grapples with the inability to find words to express oneself and communicate with others. This poignant dance piece draws audiences closer to understanding how aphasia affects humanity.
